The views are beautiful! This canyon has a bit less tree coverage that Cascade Canyon, which I’d hiked the day before. Close call!Ĭontinued on, hooking westward into the canyon entrance. Left the trail, did my business, and right when I got back on the trail, a runner went by. The falafel from the day before was doing a number.

They were both very vocal!Ībout a mile into the hike, despite the fact I’d already done it twice that morning, nature called and I need to poo. Shortly, I could hear another bull on the side of Mount Woodring, but I never could spot it through the trees. I used my Bushnell binoculars to locate the 6圆 bull and two cows that were with him. Immediately I could hear an elk bugling on the side of Rockchuck Peak. At the TH, I drank some coffee, ate breakfast, and slowly gathered my gear.Īt 712am Mountain Time, I left the String Lake TH, heading south around the lake. Then continued on into the park and to the trailhead. So, I pulled out on the highway and utilized the 4G connection for a while. As it entered the roundabout to head north on the highway, I thought “Huh, nearly 630am, and it isn’t getting light out even a bit.” Looked at the clock in my car, and it was actually 530am! A few times this trip, for whatever reason, my phone and Garmin watch jumped back to Central Time where I live. Started my coffee, changed a few of my clothes, and departed the campsite at 6am headed for the String Lake Trailhead. The day started at 530am, I woke up in my little tent on Gros Ventre campground in Grand Teton. 36 degrees F, sunny, no wind at the start. Hiking alone, with bear spray, 3 bottles of water, and snack lunch. Hike: String Lake TH, through Paintbrush Canyon, to nearly Paintbrush Divide, to Holly Lake, then back to String Lake TH.
